Easy shrimp and lazy person's cocktail sauce

I've recently discovered shrimp. Now I'm a big fan, especially because it takes about 10 minutes start to finish to prep and cook it for dinner. Plus I really love horseradish. I know shrimp cocktail is probably old news to you, but to me it's new and delicious and exciting a little. I bought this horseradish because it says gluten-free on the back, and says HOT on the front. I love horseradish, did I say that yet? This horseradish is strong. Good strong. I recommend it. 

Steamed shrimp

1 lb shell on medium to small shrimp
1 T seafood seasoning (I used Old Bay)

Toss the shrimp with the seasoning (optional - you can just steam them plain) and set aside. Bring an inch or so of water to boil, then drop a steamer basket in, then toss in the shrimp. Cover and steam 3-5 minutes, until the shrimp are pink and slightly curled. Remove and set in a bowl over a bowl of ice, or stick in the fridge til you're ready to use. 
Almost Cocktail Sauce

1/2 c ketchup
2-4 T horseradish 
a squeeze of lemon or lime juice

Mix everything together. Let sit for a little while for the flavors to mix, or use right away. 


  1. Oh yeah, love love love horseradish! Have you ever tried beet horseradish? It is my idea of a quintessential Passover side/accompaniment! I actually love it mixed with creme fraiche, chopped scallions and maybe some dill as a dip for vegies! I could eat freshly grated horseradish on anything!

  2. You mean that isn't real cocktail sauce? That's the way I've been making it for years, it's the way my honey taught me.

    I know I've said it before but we love shrimp, too. Yup, we're shrimp lovers from waaaaay back!
